For Our Futures: Indigenous Resilience Report
In Ottawa - A contingent of Indigenous scholars from across their respective territories in what settlers call Canada came together for the release of their resilience report.
The report presents case stories, climate change and adaptation research through an Indigenous lens, structured on five key principles:
Indigenous Peoples have unique strengths in responding to environmental and climate changes.
Climate change is one of many crises Indigenous Peoples face.
Indigenous Peoples use diverse indicators and methods to observe, monitor, and assess change.
The food, water, and energy nexus is central to Indigenous climate leadership.
Self-determination is critical to Indigenous-led climate action.
For Our Futures was built through deep collaboration and is an example of the importance of multidisciplinary and multidimensional research. Though this is a first step and introduction to Indigenous perspectives on resilience, there is an opportunity to build greater frameworks for deep collaborative indigenous-led research that can shape a new path forward for all.
The information in this report is not new to many Indigenous communities; however, in the context of a federal assessment on adaptation, it will give the knowledge to a new audience in the Canadian Public.
The next phase of federal assessments could be built around this report and informed by the case stories within. New collaborative efforts to bring the country into a more sustainable path can help many adapt to the changing climate. It also lends itself well to viewing economic and resource development differently.
